Welcome to 2018! I’m hoping that this year will mark a turning point. A turn towards equality, fairness and compassion in the world. But as a good friend of mine often observes “hope is not a strategy”. So I find myself wondering “what can I do?” and I’m inspired by the words of Thomas Merton:

I’m sure I’m not alone in being inspired by the Golden Globe awards on Sunday. Actors took to the red carpet dressed in black and accompanied by activists. It was such a powerful example of how they could use their platform to advocate for a better world.
Years ago a yoga instructor shared an insight which rings true repeatedly for me. She observed that almost all yoga injuries occur when people are exiting a pose. We naturally put a lot of attention on how we begin things, how we start a new job, commence a relationship and how we enter and even hold our positions, but when it’s time to leave we tend to just bolt, spending little time thinking about exiting gently, consciously and without causing harm.
A recent post on the CiPD website, Diversity of thinking is key to successful decision-making, brought to mind Albert Einstein’s famous quote:
“We cannot solve our problems with the the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Watching the news is despairing, especially as the Trump administration announces cuts to the EPA, after school programs and meals on wheels. “What on earth is he thinking?” we ask ourselves. Well really the answer is obvious – and has been spelled out – in the eyes of Trump (and many business people) if something isn’t making money then it simply isn’t working.

I often recommend this poignant and pertinent piece to help people understand the context propelling us to place explicit attention on humanising work. Our intention is not to deny the reality of our busy lives, 24/7 connectivity and having to do even more with even less, but rather to create islands of respite within the storm.
